How to solve your living space problems (and help Australia at the same time)

Living Space Covid

There are many lessons Australia can take out of the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most important should be our need to become more self-sufficient. We need to reduce our need for overseas supplies from countries like China and to manufacture more products in Australia instead.

The alternative is to be a country dependent on (and subservient) to other countries for many of our basic living requirements. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that Australia cannot afford to be in that precarious position. Supporting homegrown industries has never been as important as it is right now.

The problem

Did you know that China supplies 90% of Australia’s merchandise imports and that the bulk of those imports are manufactured products? The proud ‘Made in Australia’ label is very hard to find these days, but you can find ‘made in China’ everywhere.

This is a real problem with the challenges Australia (and especially Melbourne) faces due to the impact of COVID-19 on the economy.

The solution

Many economists are now stressing the importance of reinvigorating Australia’s manufacturing sector. Manufacturing now accounts for only about 6% of Australia’s GDP, yet in the 1950s it was 29%. It has steadily declined ever since, and so has Australia’s vulnerability.

How we can help

At Garden Studios in Melbourne, we architecturally design and build prefabricated, 100% Australian garden studios (also known as granny flats) to suit a wide variety of needs. We use no Chinese inputs whatsoever, and none from any other country. We are proudly Australian (and Victorian)!

Not only do we use all-Australian materials, we also use Australian innovation in our prefabrication process. All of the key components of our garden studios are prefabricated in our state-of-the art production facility using a CNC router (a computer-controlled cutting machine) to ensure precise, custom specifications are met. All windows and doors are recessed into our pre-fabricated panels, eliminating the need (and cost) of double-glazed windows.

No carpenters (or even nails) are used in our prefabrication process. This eliminates the possibility for human error and ensures our high quality standards are maintained. It also reduces the cost of our studios.  Our prefabricated garden studio components are assembled on site in the yards of our clients, greatly enhancing the value of their homes.

If you need more living space at your home for your growing (or adult) kids or for elderly parents who moving in with you, check out our range of stylish garden studio designs here. We can also customise our designs to suit your individual situation. We’ll take the time to understand your specific needs and we’ll provide you with the right advice.

Best of all, our prefabricated design and construction processes help to make our garden studios extremely affordable and quick to build. We also use the same processes to do affordable modular home extensions if that’s an option you’d prefer.
